Earth as Art: Art in Science, Science in Art

See our planet as a masterpiece, showing all the overwhelming beauty of its natural surroundings and do it from a point of view unknown to man. This is the content of the magnificent book “Earth as Art” recently published by NASA.

Since the United States in 1960 put into orbit the first satellite of the Earth environmental observation, there are many images collected by the National Aeronautics and Space on the various ecosystems of this planet. Many of these images have a strong visual, compositional structure and chromatic richness worthy of being exhibited in the best art museums. And now, with excellent judgment, NASA has compiled and published a selection of the most beautiful images collected by its satellites over the years of observation and research.

The idea of seeing art in science and science in art we find fascinating. Break the barriers traditionally imposed between these two disciplines, providing this way a different and enriching educational vision to work with in schools or just to enjoy at home with the young and old.

This book, available for free as an app for tablets or as a pdf file seems a great tool for schools, both in art class, natural science or geography. It helps enhance the curriculum and conveys a more integrated view of man at his most human side related to its natural surroundings.

Using the imagination in this book we will discover Pollock´s expressive force on the Mayn River strokes in Siberia, or the lights of Monet pasted on Mount Elgon on the border between Kenya and Uganda, or the chromatic subtlety Fernando Zobel in the sands of Iguidi Erg in the Sahara desert. And so on and so forth in 75 breathtaking images which will make us enjoy the integration of art, science and technology. We hope you find it useful.
